When their budget allows, BSSP Boro Park Shomrim holds an annual BBQ for their volunteers to kick back and enjoy a relaxing evening together. It is common for them to invite police officers with whom they have a close relationship, and friends from other Shomrim organizations. We understand that Shomrim needs to have a professional working relationship with the NYPD.
However, when does this relationship cross a line? During this year's BBQ, BSSP Boro Park Shomrim presented the NYPD's 66th Precinct's Commanding Officer Inspector Deddo with a surprise birthday cake. Their incredibly close relationship with Inspector Deddo raises many concerns.
Seen in this video are BSSP Boro Park Shomrim Coordinators Jacob "Yanky" Daskal Unit-05, Simcha Bernath Unit-74, and Sam Follman Unit-48. With them are BSSP Boro Park Shomrim members Ari Weiss Unit-93, Meir Wax Unit-43, and alleged sex offender David Shea Friedman Unit-82. Also present is FSSP Flatbush Shomrim Coordinator Chaim Deutsch Unit-01 and NYC Councilman David Greenfield.
While a safety patrol can be a great asset to the NYPD, only the government should be in charge of law enforcement. In order to be effective, the NYPD must remain objective. This is the reason that the NYPD doesn't assign officers to work within their home precincts, for example. We then ask: Can Inspector Deddo be objective with Shomrim when they have such a close relationship with him?
Does this special relationship explain the special privileges and exemptions from the law that the NYPD's 66th precinct seems to afford BSSP Boro Park Shomrim? Does this explain why the NYPD's 66th precinct allows Shomrim to operate unplated, uninsured, and unregistered vehicles with flashing emergency red and blue lights and well as emergency sirens?
The community deserves answers on the NYPD/Shomrim relationship.
